Early on, teaching good habits in an environment that's comfortable and fun is crucial for building a lifetime foundation of strong oral health. From a young age, children's teeth are very susceptible to cavities due to many factors. They lack the necessary coordination to brush well on their own. Because of this, it is paramount for parents to assist in their child's daily dental care. This promotes both thorough cleaning and the development of proper dental routines. Little kids tend to eat frequently throughout the day (grazing). This results in an extended exposure to food acids, which may encourage cavities.
Lack of proper cleaning means teeth are more in jeopardy of developing decay when food and juice acids come in contact with them, speeding up the production of cavities. The good news is that identifying poor dietary and hygiene habits, along with applying a fluoride varnish to the mineralizing teeth, can drastically reduce the odds of your child incurring a cavity.
Dental sealants counteract poor brushing ability in children. Even though they try hard, children many times don't do an excellent job of brushing their teeth. After all, they're still learning, and their hand-to-eye coordination isn't fully developed. In fact, even adults have problems reaching every area in their mouths while brushing. Even with meticulous brushing, the deep grooves in the back teeth may not be thoroughly cleaned. This results in bacteria and plaque formation, which will lead to decay. And once the tooth has decay, it is damaged permanently and will need a filling or crown.
Here's how dental sealants work:
Applying dental sealants is one of the best measures both children and adolescents can do to prevent damage and preserve their natural teeth!
Would you prevent the need for braces if you could? Of course, you would! Many of us remember the embarrassment and irritation of wearing braces as a child. In some cases, braces are absolutely necessary in order to fix serious malocclusion (or bite disorders). However, in many situations, early treatment by a qualified and knowledgeable dentist can reduce the extent of orthodontics or possibly remove the need altogether!
Younger children have the beneficial leeway of growth on their side. Their teeth and bones are more pliable than those of adults. Realizing a child has a malocclusion at an early age can be very favorable in structuring how their permanent teeth grow together. The earlier the detection, the more planning and prevention we can offer to your child. However, if braces are a necessity, we offer braces that are more comfortable and attractive than ever before. It used to be that a child or adult might spend 3 to 5 years in treatment. Not anymore! The time required for treatment will change from person to person but in most cases can be completed in 6 - 24 months or even less.
